Using the BRAIN to LEARN: Utilizing What We Know About What We Know

Drawing upon the research of Eric Jensen and David Rock, we delve into the methodology behind activity-based learning and its effectiveness in promoting knowledge retention and understanding. By examining the purpose of learning objectives and tailoring learning activities to specific brain functions, this approach aims to create neural connections that foster long-term memory and higher reasoning. To illustrate the practical application of activity-based learning, we highlight a case study in Kenya where a training activity successfully enhanced communication skills within a multinational organization. Furthermore, we discuss other instances where this approach has been implemented in various settings, including private companies. Overall, this essay emphasizes the importance of incorporating the science of the brain into educational practices to optimize learning outcomes, particularly in adults.
