Mathematics Education for Peacebuilding: An Innovative Approach to Instilling Values
摘要
Education is central to UNESCO’s mission of changing people’s lives, fostering peace, and promoting sustainable development. Science education has been viewed as a means of improving both the human condition and competitiveness. There is a notion that Mathematics, which is taught systematically and is perceived to be robotic, cannot be considered to promote peace. This research explores the intersection of Mathematics education, peacebuilding, and values instillation as a means to address challenges such as conflict, instability, weak institutions, and corruption. The study challenges the conventional belief that Mathematics is disconnected from fostering peace and harmony, aligning with UNESCO’s commitment to transforming lives and promoting sustainable development. The paper presents an innovative approach initiated through a workshop on “Instilling Values through Mathematical Concepts” at St. Joseph’s College of Education in Mysuru, Karnataka, India. This approach extracts values from Mathematics concepts in grades 8–10 textbooks, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The study showcases the positive impact of integrating these values into teaching practices, emphasizing the transformative potential of Mathematics education in contributing to a more peaceful and cooperative future.
