Developing a Framework for Effective Localization (not Just Language) of Learning Games

  • Ajay Gupta

摘要

Games are tools of immense instructional value. Games can create an environment where learners engage in goal-directed behavior requiring attention, problem-solving, decision-making, collaboration and immediate feedback loops that trigger reflection and adaptation. Critics argue that game-based learning, although rich in engagement, often falls short of establishing a meaningful link to a learner’s work environment. Consequently, this lack of relevance may hinder the transfer of learning to the learner’s work context. This paper explores localization in the context of the design and development of learning games. By localization, we mean tailoring learning games to specific job and work contexts closer to the learner’s natural work environment. Through a case study of a successful localization project, we will identify best practices and develop a framework for effectively localizing learning games. The goal is to bridge the gap between the fun and engaging experience of a learning game and the real on-the-job context of a learner, making the learning process more relatable and engaging.
