摘要

This chapter focuses on a selection of texts that represent opposing ideologies regarding the issue of racial justice, in order to demonstrate how the linguistic patterns that define the American identity can be used within American culture by different social groups to ensure a reliable source of positive evaluation for their causes. We will demonstrate how the pre-Civil-War narrative that justified the institution of slavery was transformed into the arguments that would later be used in support of racial segregation and white supremacy.
