The Status of Teachers and Professors

  • Hamza R’boul

摘要

This chapter engages with the recent developments in the status of teachers and professors. It clarifies how teachers and professors are situated within the state labour system, including their conditions (official status, remuneration, etc.), duties (expected responsibilities, outcomes, etc.) and struggles (demanding better salaries and working conditions). It also discusses the debates that have accompanied the decision to embrace the contract system and teachers’ major dissatisfaction with such policy (strikes, protests, etc.). This chapter emphasizes how successive governments foreground issues that would entail minimum political responsibility and which may not broach questions about their accountability in case their plans and/or projects do not achieve the intended goals. Then, the chapter overviews the status of university professors and deconstructs the newly mandated legislations, such as salary increases, promotion requirements and recruitment standards. The chapter hopes to contribute a critical appraisal of the status of teachers and professors in Morocco.
