Reshaping Education Through AI: A Progressive Model for Developing Economies

AI has transformed the education sector globally. According to the market analysis report published by Grand View Research, 2021, AI in the education sector world-wide is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.0% from 2022 to 2030. Technological advancements, increasing investments in AI and EdTech, by private and public entities, onset of the COVID19 pandemic, the changing mindset of the masses towards the understanding and adoption of technology etc. have been cited as few of the factors that have spearheaded this revolution. Nevertheless, developing economies facing challenges related to income inequality, poverty, and other socio-economic issues, are striving to ensure that their educational kaleidoscope is not left behind when it comes to AI integration. In this context, an attempt is made to understand the need for AI adoption in the education sector regarding developing economies, the current state of AI adoption in the education sector and the major challenges faced in these economies. Emphasis is laid on understanding what needs to change in terms of governance, syllabus preparation, classroom interaction, pedagogy, and evaluation. The AI tools that could be employed, the ethical aspects involved and a model for AI adoption in the education sector, integrating all stakeholders will be presented. A few case studies from developing economies would also be included to give the topic in-depth coverage. The authors believe that the outcome of the study would provide practical insights for developing economies in effectively integrating AI into education.
