The Discipline of Geography and Geography Education

Geography has become an essential school subject to understand and live sustainably in the world. This chapter reviews the contemporary debates about geography as a science and updates the importance of geographical education to teaching and learning about global challenges. Geographical education is described as one of the most dynamic branches of geography and as playing an important role in the main international and national geographical associations and organizations, in particularly the IGU (and its Commission on Geographical Education), EUROGEO, AAG, and SEAGA.
