The Geographically Informed Person: Past, Present, and Future

The continued existence of pre-collegiate geography education is at risk. How can we make a case that geography matters? Answering that question requires understanding the educational goal in the past, present, and future. We can learn from past successes and failures by considering rationales: informed for what purposes; contents: informed about what things; and pedagogies: informed in what ways. The geographically informed person is an applied geographer, taking geographic knowledge and skills and applying them to everyday life.
