摘要

People have different ideas about the nature and importance of geography education. Such ideas are often shaped by the perception of geography as a study and career pathway and also by the value placed upon geography education in school curriculum. Understanding about the rigor and relevance of geography education varies throughout the world. Therefore, in this chapter, we aim to support both those who are new to the field of geography education and those who are seeking to strengthen and clarify existing understanding by providing an overview about the “what” and “why” of geography education, together with the “how.” In addition to focusing on different ways in which geography can be taught and learned, we also describe key areas of research in geography education. Following on from this, we also address important challenges facing the field of geography education. The conclusion of the chapter states that although geography education differs from place to place, the study of geography can fascinate and inspire people when taught effectively.
