Designing Richer Science Learning Experiences Using Geography

Education systems are siloed for many practical reasons, but a siloed system has created a somewhat false division between science and geography. Ideas and practices within science and geography can both be leveraged in ways to enhance learning and provide an authentic context for students to engage in phenomena. This chapter provides context for the changing landscape of science education that has allowed for integration of geography into science classrooms. The elevation of Earth and environmental science, the emphasis on science and engineering practices, and the use of phenomenon-driven and problem-based learning are shifts in science education where we have found the most promise for geography. The chapter uses a series of case studies to describe how geography enhances student learning in science. It also describes a process designers can use to identify the most fruitful opportunities for integrating geography and science in their own education systems.
