A Proposal of Application for Learning About Document Structuring and Styling Through Pictogram Content Creation

Learning document structuring and styling such as HTML and CSS is one of the important topics in informatics studies. However, sufficient study hours are necessary for beginners to understand the markup language and the style sheet language. In addition, it is difficult for beginners to create well-designed web contents. Therefore, the learning environment that enables the creation of web contents in a short time is required. We focused on pictogram which have characteristic of high abstracted symbols to create such an environment. This paper proposes “Pictagramming”, an application that users can study document structuring and styling through pictogram content creation. We conducted a classroom practice and found that proposed application makes it possible to conduct web content creation practice in a short time while having fun. We also found that some issues with system usability have remained. We plan to enhance the usability of our applications in the future.
