Initial Investigation of the Sentiment Analysis Similarities and Consistencies in English and Chinese

With the advancement of social media and online anonymity, people have started expressing their opinions more openly. The automatic analysis of opinions and related trends enables the understanding, assessment and monitoring of people’s opinions, their social interactions, and overall impact that such opinions may have on human societies. Most of the existing tools have been modelled and trained to address European languages, which has led to limitations in the analysis of other languages. In this work we aim to conduct an initial evaluation of the accuracy of Google Translate at assessing sentiment analysis of short Chinese comments by translating them into English to be subsequently analysed.
