How to Create a Comprehensive Bariatric Center

The concept of a metabolic and bariatric center has been enshrined with the establishment of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program created jointly by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. This has led to the creation and maintenance of dedicated centers that provide surgical care for the disease of obesity. This has improved outcomes and increased the safety of metabolic and bariatric surgery. All centers that participate in this initiative have demonstrated that they meet the baseline standards but there are programs that are more comprehensive in nature. This chapter discusses the characteristics of comprehensive bariatric centers.
