Revisions and Conversions After Adjustable Gastric Band

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) has been available in the United States since 2001. While it is no longer commonly performed, it was previously a popular procedure for the treatment of obesity. Greater than 167,000 LAGBs were placed in the United States from 2011 through 2021 (ASMBS. Estimate of Bariatric Surgery Numbers, 2011–2021. https://asmbs.org/resources/estimate-of-bariatric-surgery-numbers ). A percentage of these patients developed long term issues including complications such as slips/erosions or inadequate weight loss and/or weight recidivism. As with other bariatric surgery procedures, there is a continued need for surgical revisions and conversions in this patient population. This chapter will review options for surgical revision and conversion following LAGB.
