Medically Supervised Weight Loss and Effects of Anti-Obesity Medications
摘要
The treatment of obesity dates back centuries; however, it was only in the twentieth century that focused efforts began with the introduction of the first true anti-obesity medications (AOM). Decades of trial and error followed with early AOMs, with many eventually withdrawn from use due to significant side effects. As the focus on safety and efficacy increased, so has the array of options over the last several decades that have arisen for the treatment of obesity. While obesity has gained recognition as a chronic disease requiring lifelong management for optimal health outcomes in recent years, there is still work to be done in this regard. Determining the ideal use for AOMs, with considerations of the indicated duration of use and potential side effects, is best suited for multidisciplinary discussions with the added consideration of access barriers that may prevent eligible patients from obtaining these medications.
