Anesthetic Considerations with Robot-Assisted Surgery

Minimally invasive robot-assisted urologic procedures have become increasingly common as they have benefits from both a surgical and recovery standpoint. These procedures require a patient to undergo general anesthesia and then be placed in a specific position that enables them to be docked to a robot to undergo the particular surgical procedure. Once an incision is made, an internal working space is created inside the patient by insufflating the abdomen and pelvis with carbon dioxide. This scenario creates both expected and occasionally unexpected physiologic changes that anesthesiologists must anticipate. This chapter tackles the unique intersection of the patient, the anesthetic, and the robot-assisted urologic procedures.
