Verification and Validation of Knowledge Engineering Systems: A Life Cycle Framework

The aim of this paper is to develop a life cycle framework for knowledge engineering systems’ development, use, and maintenance. The framework integrates verification and validation (V&V) paradigms of software engineering into the different Knowledge Engineering Systems (KES). A simple generic life cycle model is used, consisting of knowledge input, construction, and use. The paper proposes three strategies for incorporating V&V into building and maintaining reliable systems. During development and during operation, conduct periodic and perpetual V&V. The framework provides a comprehensive treatment of V&V to support the operation of KES throughout its expected life cycle span. Future research will provide a detailed, individualized framework for incorporating V&V into generative AI systems.
