European mathematicians in 1800 were ignorant of much of the geometry developed after 1600. We have already noted one work that was lost, Girard Desargues’ Brouillon project, of 1639, although some content was known from the negative critiques which did survive. A transcription by Philippe de la Hire would be discovered in 1845.
