Kitsh in Design: Decoding Symbolic Meanings and Cultural Signifiers

This chapter conducts a semiological analysis and decoding of the book cover Animal Farm by George Orwell, focusing on kitsch elements in design. The analysis delves into the symbolic meanings conveyed through recognisable symbols, cultural references, and visual aspects present on the cover. The study uncovers layers of symbolism embedded within the design by examining technical and visual aspects, including colour distribution, iconic representations, and thematic relevance. For instance, the use of vibrant colours, such as orange and yellow, alongside iconic imagery like the pig and windmill, contributes to the kitsch aesthetic and evokes emotional responses from viewers. Furthermore, the interpretation of these symbols varies across diverse cultural backgrounds, highlighting the significance of cultural context in decoding semiotic elements in kitsch designs.
