The importance of innovation and its connection with small business sector have drawn a significant attention in small business research and David, as a pioneer in entrepreneurship research, established an ‘entrepreneurial eco-system’ (Parker et al. in Small Bus Econ 62:1–21, 2023) which has been extensively applied into research on the connection of innovation, creativity and small business sector, as early as 1994 in his masterpiece, Understanding the Small Business Sector (Storey in Understanding the small business sector, Routledge, 1994).
