Canada and the Human Rights and Peacebuilding Nexus

This chapter introduces the human rights and peacebuilding nexus and provides a broad overview of Canadian foreign policy related to peacekeeping, peacebuilding and human rights. In so doing, it offers the context for exploring Canadian foreign policy, broadly defined, at the emerging human rights and peacebuilding nexus before going on to provide the outline of our book. The chapters in this book demonstrate a consistent forward-looking public pronunciation of Canada’s foreign policy on peace, human rights, and the nexus which engages a range of actors including the state, civil society, Indigenous peoples, and individuals. However, it finds that its implementation is inconsistent, and offers avenues for it to be strengthened and made more explicit.
