How Netflix and “Platform Imperialism” Compromise the Korean Drama Industry

  • Marcy L. Tanter

摘要

Netflix has become the major source of Korean cultural content in the United States and has entered the domestic Korean entertainment market with its own studios and a promise to pump billions of dollars into the industry during the next several years. This interference is welcomed by many companies who are excited to have the backing of Netflix as a production partner to create dramas and films that are “binge worthy,” but there are also some signs of fear that the giant Netflix and its “platform imperialism” will wield power in Korea that will force companies to bend to its will and cause them to lose some of their creativity and autonomy. American media companies should watch these developments closely and adjust their own plans for growth based on how well the Netflix-Korea partnership plays out.
