Speculative Affect: Objects and Emotions renders more deliberative the relationship between states of affect and nonhuman forms or forces. The intent of this volume is to expand the interstices and intersections of these two broad fields of social and cultural inquiry: affect and objects. In attending to what has been an underdeveloped theoretical juncture in affect theory and theories of new materialism and speculative realism—a speculative affect beyond and outside of the human—the essays put greater pressure on one of the last thresholds between human and nonhuman life. By bringing affect closer to object life, the ethical aim of this volume is to “distribute value more generously [and]... to inspire a greater sense of the extent to which all bodies are kin in the sense of inextricably enmeshed in a dense network of relations” (Jane Bennett in Vibrant Matter, Duke University Press, p. 13).
