Despite being trained as mental health providers (MHPs) in settings very different from primary care (PC), both of us authors have adopted PC as home. Thinking back on our initial days in PC, though, it wasn’t always this way. The process of settling in required time and a willingness to ask and learn about the different roles in primary care and how they work together to support the mission. There’s lots to learn for a newcomer, so this chapter introduces the purpose of PC and the most commonly present staff members in a clinic. It also provides information about current challenges in PC (e.g., workforce shortages, underinvestment, fragmentation, value-based care, technology burden, and acquisitions of practices). The chapter ends with some practical strategies for the newcomer to follow in order to stay current in the ever-changing world of PC and fully enjoy the rewards of becoming a member of the PC team.

摘要
