This chapter describes a day in the life of a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC)—it’s a Monday, and it’s a busy one! Sam has worked at his clinic for 2 years, and he was recently endorsed as an advanced BHC (see details about the career progression pathways for BHCs in Chap. 11). He is interested in becoming a BHC 2 trainer for his system. Sam’s schedule at the beginning of the day includes three follow-up visits, three initial patient visits, a diabetes class-based service, and a pathway meeting. As the day unfolds, five opportunities for same-day services arise. While saying, “Yes!” to the same-day requests, Sam still manages to make handouts for the next day’s chronic pain class and to assist with an angry patient in the waiting area. This chapter also includes Sam’s thoughts about visit strategies and the population-based care perspective about patients he meets on this busy Monday.
