Even within the first year of practice, some Behavioral Health Consultants (BHC) express interest in progressing toward leadership roles in their new career. Invariably, BHCs asking about career progression pathways share stories about providing more care to more people and the joys of working on a team. Their passion leads them to attain greater levels of mastery in BHC competencies and to seek out opportunities to spread the model so that more professionals and people can benefit from it. In this chapter, we suggest several specific areas of focus for Behavioral Health Consultant 2s (advanced BHCs): management and clinical supervision, program evaluation, and teaching. Whatever the area of emphasis that interests a BHC, all BHCs interested in advanced roles need to develop leadership skills that promote their success in their chosen area of advanced work. Readers with interests in training others will benefit from learning about the content, format, and methods of teaching suggested in this chapter, as well as innovations in the field, such as the role of the BHC 3 (or master trainer).
