Promotion of Agritourism as a Sustainable Form of Tourism

Sustainable tourism has become an important topic among researchers and practitioners, both at a micro level, i.e. firm level, and at a macro level, i.e. destination, regional, or national levels. Due to the negative influences of mass tourism and over-tourism on sustainability, the tourism industry is currently under close scrutiny. Agritourism appears to have substantial benefits in terms of environmental, social-cultural, and economic sustainability. Based on this background, this chapter explains the negative influences of over-tourism and the advantages of agritourism from a sustainability perspective. The chapter has a special emphasis on the potential benefits of agritourism in terms of reducing gender discrimination in tourism and in society as a whole.
