From i* to the User Requirements Notation

The i* language enables the conceptual modelling and analysis of actors and goals, along intentional, social, and strategic dimensions. This chapter explains how i* influenced the development of the Goal-oriented Requirement Language (GRL), first standardized by the International Telecommunication Union in 2008 as part of the User Requirements Notation (URN). In addition to a historical perspective on i* and the creation of GRL, the chapter reflects on the differences and commonalities between i* and URN in terms of syntax, features, and analysis capabilities. It further explores other extensions of URN that go beyond the standardized version, in support of aspects, legal compliance, feature modelling, time extensions, and others. The global impact of i* on goal modelling is also assessed through the lens of URN.
