Sleep Disorders, Inflammation, and COVID-19

Within the last 3 years, much progress has been made in characterizing immune responses associated with the SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus causative of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 has complex actions on the immune system and induces a broad array of pathological symptoms affecting numerous biological systems causing multiple short-term transient diseases, including respiratory deficiencies. In addition, long-term effects of COVID-19COVID-19, including cough, chest painPain, and shortness of breath, occur in about 33% percent of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. While SARS-CoV-2 primarily causes respiratory symptoms, it is also associated with various neurological symptoms. Thus, patients who recovered from COVID-19COVID-19 infection often have chronic sleep disorders suggesting that COVID-19COVID-19 respiratory and neurologic pathologies lead to increased sleep disorders. The mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 induces sleep disorders are not entirely clear. Herein we discuss some hypotheses about the relationship between COVID-19COVID-19 infection and sleep disorders.
