Sub-Saharan Africa: South Africa “Decolonising lR in South Africa: Teaching Pan-African Thought as an International Relations Theory”

The practice and teaching of International Relations (IR) in South Africa reflect its history, influenced by colonialism and apartheid, and its struggle to inculcate African epistemologies in the teaching of IR. Essentially, post-1994 IR pedagogy has been shaped by tensions of creating policy-relevant IR that considers the state’s interests and ideology. The chapter highlights South Africa's complex IR teaching history and current efforts to decolonize curricula while developing a uniquely South African IR theory tradition. It presents the Pan-African Thought, as taught at the University of Johannesburg, as an IR theory that responds to desires for decolonized curricula that reflect histories and knowledge outside of Continental Europe and Anglo-American.
