Caribbean “Insights on Teaching International Relations Theories in the Caribbean”

Although International Relations is an interdisciplinary field of study, it has traditionally been approached from a Eurocentric viewpoint, hindering an understanding of developments in the Global South. Understanding Global South perspectives involves critiquing the Western-centric nature of mainstream IR theories and recognizing the obstacles faced by scholars from these regions, which contribute to the marginalization of their perspectives in mainstream discourse. The aim is to broaden the scope of IR theory to foster a more equitable and inclusive understanding of international relations. The literature is limited and little has been said about teaching and learning IR theories in the Caribbean. It is relevant, therefore, to tackle this silence Thus, in this chapter, we discuss how teaching IR in the Caribbean are conducting dynamic classroom practices inorder to help enhance student engagement with diverse material and topics to which they were previously not exposed. The Caribbean’s critical and radical thought advances key questions about the challenges and unresolved issues faced by its States as former plantation societies.How we teach is a central aspect of the process of reproducing, perpetuating, and creating new IR narratives by bringing other voices into the debate.
