Maps “Introducing IR Theory with Historical Maps”

This chapter introduces a novel approach to teaching IR theories by integrating historical maps into classroom discussions. Focusing on the intersections of Constructivism, Realism, and Post-structuralism, the authors demonstrate how analyzing maps can elucidate key concepts within each theoretical tradition. Through analysis strategies such as visual thinking strategies (VTS), students are encouraged to critically engage with maps as theoretical texts, challenging the presumption of their objectivity. The article also highlights the benefits of incorporating maps into IR education, including fostering interdisciplinary learning and enhancing students' understanding of political geography. Additionally, practical considerations for implementing this approach, including available digital resources, are discussed. Ultimately, by leveraging the visual and analytical power of maps, educators can provide students with tangible tools for exploring complex IR theories and understanding the geopolitical landscape.
