Science Fiction “Using Science Fiction to Teach IR Theory: From Fictional to Theoretical Narratives (and Back)”

This chapter addresses the challenges of teaching International Relations Theory (IRT) and proposes a novel pedagogical approach by integrating Science Fiction (SF) into the curriculum. Drawing on their teaching experiences in Brazilian universities, the authors highlight the struggle of professors to make theoretical debates accessible and interesting. They argue that incorporating SF provides an alternative framework for students to explore theoretical concepts beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries. By utilizing imaginative narratives, SF serves as a captivating platform, allowing students to critically engage with texts, challenge preconceptions, and bridge the perceived gap between theory and practice. The chapter explores the benefits of using SF as a pedagogical tool, providing insights into overcoming traditional teaching challenges. It culminates with a practical example using Ursula K. Le Guin's “The Word for World is Forest” to elucidate the role of narratives in theory, offering a compelling class exercise for deeper understanding.
