Socratic Method “Teaching IR Theory Using the Socratic Method”

Questions provoke students to put forward their opinions. This chapter unpacks the transformative power of the classical Socratic method and introduces an innovative approach with guiding principles for teaching international relations (IR) theory. The Socratic method offers an answer to high student engagement by facilitating lively discussions, enhancing independent thinking, and nurturing self-reflective personalities. With open discussion, students not only increase their interest in relevant theories but also develop their unique standpoints regardless of preparation or knowledge. Highlighting the adaptability of dialogical teaching, the chapter proposes four core features and guiding principles for an inclusive, collaborative, and experiential learning journey in IR, using interactive technologies to challenge traditional teaching and prepare students for the complexities of global issues. The Socratic environment challenges passive didactic teaching with critical pedagogy, cultivates students’ genuine interest in knowledge, and equips students with public speaking skills pertinent to educating future IR scholars.
