IR Theory from the Global South “Expanding the Boundaries of International Relations Theory in the Classroom: Teaching Theory from the Global South”

This chapter reviews the process that I have undertaken to produce an International Relations Theory curriculum that is inclusive of theories and ideas from both the Global North and Global South. This was a journey of discovery in terms of acquiring the knowledge and pedagogical skills that helped me understand and address the problem of the exclusion of knowledges from the Global South in IR theory curricula. My objective was to provide students with an increased capacity to understand and analyze international relations by introducing them to knowledges from the Global South. The fact that very little of these knowledges existed in a pedagogized form or even as academic IR scholarship made the development of a curriculum complicated. Thus, I reflect on not only how I navigated these and other challenges but also the opportunities I encountered to co-create knowledge with my students.
