Questions of Categorization in (and Against) Anti-Semitism

Strosberg explores the tremendous difficulties involved with categorizing anti-Semitism as well as the Jewish targets of anti-Semitism. The author posits that meticulous study and intensive theoretical discourse are essential to prevent the perpetuation of anti-Jewish practices and misconceptions about anti-Semitism. A constellation of contemporary anti-Jewish assertions and practices are explored alongside debates surrounding Jewish identity, anti-Semitism, and anti-anti-Semitism. Emphasizing the work of David Nirenberg, Zygmunt Bauman, and Theodore W. Adorno, the chapter delineates a critical and psychoanalytic approach taken throughout the study, referred to as negative psychology. Concluding with reflections on personal encounters with anti-Semitism, the chapter establishes a comprehensive foundation for subsequent discussions on the relationship between anti-Semitism, Jewishness, and difficulties related to categorization.
