Addressing the Periprosthetic Fracture About the Acetabulum

Periprosthetic acetabular fractures are rare but serious complications following total hip arthroplasty. Although there has been many sources addressing the management of femoral component periprosthetic fractures, the guideline and evidences for managing periprosthetic acetabular fractures remain lacking in literature. As the number of total hip arthroplasty increasing each year, the total number of periprosthetic fractures will continue to rise so the need for universal guideline becomes more important. The purpose of the chapter is to offer readers the current concepts of periprosthetic acetabular fractures and management strategies based on recent clinical evidences. Treatment option includes nonoperative and surgical intervention. Intraoperative fractures and postoperative fractures are discussed in separate sections. Surgical management varies from open reduction and internal fixation with plating, the use of reconstruction cages, jumbo cups, metal augments, and bone grafting. The importance of columnar stability cannot be overemphasized.
