Ten/Twenty Important Regional Theatres
摘要
The theatres listed in the opening chapter were institutions that received (nearly) unanimous support for their inclusion in a list of “landmark” theatres. This chapter, however, contains a more diverse list suggested by various survey responses, as well as other lists offered by various writers in numerous publications. Dozens of theatres might expect to be included because of their size or their occasional success rate at discovering a playwright or producing a work that finds its way to New York or other regional theatres. Signs of only occasional success, however, are more likely the result of individual personalities and aesthetics, sheer luck in discovering local talent, or consistent support derived from a larger population. After all, it is the assumed responsibility of regional theatres to identify and nurture local talent.
