Nuclear Reactor Classification and Characteristics

The concept of a nuclear reactor was first proposed by Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist, in 1934. He suggested the possibility of a controlled nuclear chain reaction as a means of releasing large amounts of energy. Fermi’s work laid the foundation for the development of the world’s first nuclear reactor, known as the Chicago Pile-1, which achieved the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction on December 2, 1942. In his words: “There are two possible outcomes: If the result confirms the hypothesis, then you’ve made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you’ve made a discovery.” This quote reflects Fermi’s emphasis on the importance of experimentation and discovery in scientific research.
