Adsorption of Direct Red 81 onto Activated Carbon Prepared from Olive Stones: Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies
摘要
Over the past decades, water treatment solution using waste is becoming an increasingly popular and effective way of water contaminants solving. Every day, water pollution causes, approximatively 14,000 deaths [1]. In response to new regulations and environmental issues, waste-to-energy has become a major challenge for many local government authorities. In this study, the potential of renewable agri-food waste from olive stones activated carbon (AOS) and commercial activated carbon (CAC) used as adsorbent was investigated. Olive stones are collected from local market in Algeria. The prepared olive stone activated carbon was obtained by activation using phosphoric acid (20% H3PO4) and carbonization at 600 ℃ for 180 min. Adsorbent ability to direct red 81(DR81) in aqueous solutions was studied in a batch setup at various conditions such as pH, the amount of adsorbent and the initial direct red 81 concentration. Maximum (DR 81) adsorption capacity of 2.27 mgg−1 and 19.23 mgg−1 for pH 2 and 3 at 25 ℃, for AOS and CAC respectively. The characterization of the adsorbent was carried by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy before and after Direct red 81 sorption.
