Optimization of the Energy Efficiency of an Individual Housing in Béchar: Integration of Traditional Materials

This study focuses on a housing unit in the city of Bechar which is located in the southwestern region of the Algerian desert, within the Eco Bat pro-gram for the construction of 30 energy-efficient duplexes. The housing walls are characterized by polystyrene insulation, with thicknesses of 8 cm for the exterior walls, 10 cm for the roof, and 2 cm for the ground. A dynamic thermal simulation, using Pleiades-COMFIE software determined energy needs at 100 kWh/m²/year for heating and 65 kWh/m²/year for air conditioning. To improve energy efficiency, simulations were conducted with traditional materials widely used for masonry and roofing in the southern region, with the aim of valorizing local re-sources and promoting eco-friendly materials. Different wall compositions were proposed and the results indicated a minor reduction in energy needs but a significant increase in indoor average monthly temperatures (2° to 5 °C) during winter, enhancing occupant comfort. Summer temperatures slightly increased but remained within acceptable ranges, ensuring thermal comfort despite the region’s high seasonal temperatures.
