Mentalization in the Therapeutic Relationship

  • Paula Ravitz,

摘要

This chapter explores how mentalization can improve the therapeutic alliance and patient outcomes, especially for those with developmental trauma and insecure attachment. Mentalization, i.e., the ability to understand one’s own and others’ mental states, is fundamental to building epistemic trust. The authors discuss how therapists can use metacommunication, maintain a position of non-knowledge, and apply techniques to improve mentalization. These strategies help recognize and repair alliance ruptures, ultimately promoting a more effective therapeutic process.
