The extraction and characterization of biofilms from biopolymers constitute a burgeoning area of research with diverse applications in bioenergy, bioremediation, and biomedical engineering. Biofilms, complex structures comprising microorganisms embedded within an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix, offer significant potential for sustainable solutions to various environmental and medical challenges. However, the extraction of EPS from biofilms presents challenges due to the intricate physicochemical characteristics of EPS and the need to preserve cell integrity during extraction. Various extraction techniques, including physical and chemical methods such as cation exchange resin (CER) extraction, centrifugation, ultrasonication, and chemical treatments like EDTA and NaOH, have been developed to optimize EPS yield while maintaining cell viability. Characterizing the extracted EPS components is essential for understanding their properties and potential applications. Techniques such as FTIR analysis, microscopy, and enzymatic assays provide valuable insights into the composition and structure of EPS. Advancements in EPS extraction and characterization have led to innovative applications, including the production of biofuels, bioplastics, and biodegradable materials. Continued research in this interdisciplinary field holds promise for addressing global challenges while promoting sustainability and innovation.
