Strategic Sovereignty—Aspects of Its Legal Dimension

The basic questions addressed in this chapter regarding the strategic sovereignty of the European Union in its legal dimension concern the substantive content of the objective of “strategic sovereignty”, the links to the primary law of the European Union and some of the main legal ramifications of the Union’s striving for this objective: in particular, the requirements to concretise a global strategy and sub-strategies and to cope with diverse legal challenges in order to put in place elements of the Union’s sovereignty, in particular, its energy sovereignty, its economic, trade and development assistance sovereignty and its defence sovereignty.
