Soil Microbial Enzymes and Applications

摘要

A plethora of enzymes produced by microorganisms found in the soil play significant pivotal roles as they mediate several biochemical processes vital to soil fertility, organic matter breakdown, and nutrient cycling, which is why they are so important to soil health and overall ecosystem. These enzymes are synthesized by a variety of soil microbes including bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, actinomycetes, archaea and viruses help break down complex organic substances into simpler ones so that plants can absorb the nutrients. Cellulases, proteases, phosphatases, and catalases are some important soil enzymes that target particular substrates and support important ecological processes. Applications of soil microbial enzymes include environmental biotechnology, agriculture, medicine and industries. They have been applied extensively in bioremediation to break down pollutants and purify contaminated soils. In agriculture, these microbial biocatalysts have been used to improve soil fertility and overall plant development. The creation of biofertilizers and soil amendments based on enzymes has been made possible by developments in enzyme biotechnology, supporting sustainable agricultural methods. Furthermore, soil enzymes provide information on microbial activity and the effects of environmental changes, acting as bio-indicators/biosensors of soil health and quality. This chapter therefore highlights the types of microbes found in the soil, classes of soil microbial enzymes, applications of these soil microbial biocatalysts in agriculture, environment, medicine and industries. Some challenges associated with the applications of these enzymes were also elucidated.
