Wastewater Pollution and Its Effects on the Marine Environment in Kuwait

Marine pollution is a major environmental concern in many coastal areas, including Kuwait and across the Middle East. This chapter provides a detailed overview of wastewater-related marine pollution, including sources, contaminants, and consequences for the aquatic ecosystem. The chapter addresses the harmful effects of wastewater pollutants on marine ecosystems, including heavy metals, organic compounds, and microplastics. These pollutants can damage the environment physically and degrade ecosystems by disrupting food webs, building up marine biota, and remaining in the environment. The main sources of contamination are investigated, including industrial discharges, municipal sewage, oil spills, and agricultural runoff. These sources release a range of contaminants into the marine environment, which may affect marine biodiversity and coastal habitats through eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and hypoxia. The chapter also reviews the current monitoring and assessment frameworks employed by regional authorities, which are crucial for understanding the scale of the problem and guiding mitigation efforts. However, considerable challenges, such as inadequate wastewater treatment facilities and insufficient environmental legislation, have been identified as impediments to advancement. Investing in advanced treatment technologies, supporting environmental governance, and encouraging companies and communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices are some of the suggested recommended solutions. The growing risk of marine contamination in the Middle East has highlighted the urgent demand for comprehensive, long-term solutions to this grave environmental issue.
