Assessment of Radiation Exposure Hazards from Natural Sources in Kuwait

This chapter explores potential health risks from naturally occurring ionizing radiation in Kuwait. By accurately measuring radioactivity concentrations in air, water, soil, and food, it assesses the specific hazards posed by these natural sources of radiation exposure for the public by assessing the radiation doses and their distribution across Kuwait. Natural radiation contributes to overall exposure, highlighting the need for comprehensive assessment to protect public health and the environment. The importance of robust regulations and clear communication regarding natural radiation risks is stressed, supported by case studies analyzing radiation doses and potential risks. It was concluded that radiation doses for the Kuwaiti population from natural sources, including terrestrial radiation, cosmic rays, radon, and food, are below the global average. This finding is based on detailed measurements and internationally recognized dose assessment models adapted to Kuwait's specific environment. Estimated doses for both adults and children were lower than worldwide averages, suggesting minimal radiation hazard impact. However, adherence to radiation protection principles remains crucial. The chapter details exposure data, with the total annual average exposure for adults and children in Kuwait being approximately 1.3 and 1.1 mSv, respectively, compared to the global average of 2.4 mSv.
