The Present Past: Policy, Identity, and Progeny

This chapter focuses on the transgenerational transmission of memory and trauma in the context of eugenic, immigration, and welfare policies and antisemitism through three generations and the various strategies utilized in family members’ efforts to establish their individual identities. The chapter also discusses societal shifts with respect to Down syndrome that have occurred over the last 50 years or so and the relationship between these changes and welfare policy.
