Smart Home IoT Devices Influence or Impact on Elderly’s Life: A Review

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a great example of new technology providing innovative business solutions. Currently, Internet of Things (IoT) devices are very common in our day-to-day life, including industrial, professional, and domestic environments. There is no denying that the Internet of Things (IoT) plays a major role in technical advance. Homes are converting to smart homes with Home Automation systems (HA) like smart appliances, locks, Surveillance cameras. Doorbells, and so on to make it safer, smarter, and automated. IoT devices can make life easier for senior citizens like everyday tasks get easier, can help independent elderly people living safer, healthcare monitoring automation and remote monitoring, home security from alerting unusual activities or break-in However, at the same time these IoT devices makes many major security risks to users like cyber criminals could easily exploited these devices due to the overlooked inbuilt security and privacy policies. Many seniors have concerns over the privacy risks of these devices like corporate companies to access personal information and consumer tastes. Lack of technical support from the vendor for installation, maintenance, is another study area of this paper. further important security aspect is the physical security and safety of IoT devices and sensors, like theft and vandalism. Therefore, this research focuses on two different aspects, impact, or improvements of elderly life with advancement of smart home IoT devices and the overview of HA devices physical as well as cyber security concerns and remedies. Finally, this paper concludes with a thorough discussion of the above-mentioned open issues for future studies.
