Insights from Engagement Research for Online L2 Instruction

This chapter is dedicated to exploring pedagogical insights derived from research on synchronous online learner engagement (SOLE) for online L2 instruction. It begins by presenting six essential pedagogical points, drawing from recent findings in both face-to-face and online classrooms. Subsequently, the chapter introduces an engagement-based pedagogy (EBP) tailored for L2 instruction, offering insights on integration into existing L2 teaching methodologies. The final section delves into the pivotal role of teacher education (TE) in the professional development of online L2 teachers. Emphasis is placed on preparing both pre-service and in-service teachers to navigate the intricacies of online L2 instruction, focusing on effectively promoting learner engagement and implementing productive interactions in virtual classrooms.
